The House Just Voted To Give Wall Street Billions From Americans' Retirement Savings
HP | Ben Walsh | 04/28/16

Investment advisers are allowed to give you bad advice. The House wants to keep it that way.

The House voted 234 to 188 Thursday to undo a rule proposed by the Labor Department earlier this month that would require anyone getting paid to provide retirement investment advice to act in the best interest of retirees. Many people think that's already how things work, but it isn't.

The way things work right now is that brokers who oversee retirement savings accounts can be paid extra to steer their clients into unnecessarily expensive funds or excessively risky investments, without disclosing that fact to their clients. That sort of conflicted investment advice costs Americans saving for retirement $17 billion a year, according to the White House Council of Economic Advisers. ... Read more

What Caused the Financial Crisis?

There can be no sure answer to the question of when a massive crisis "begin[s]." Attempting to answer the question implicitly requires understanding the causes of the crisis. The global financial crisis required three elements to come together. We needed huge losses on assets, a hyper-inflated bubble, and the failure of a systemically dangerous financial institution. These three elements may not "begin" at the same time.

In the United States, the losses came from the two great epidemics of loan origination fraud -- appraisal fraud and "liar's" loans. Those losses were then reallocated through the third great epidemic of fraud, sales of the fraudulently originated loans through fraudulent "reps and warranties" to the secondary market and investors. These three fraud epidemics, each an example of "accounting control fraud," also caused the financial bubble to hyper-inflate. The bubble, in turn, increases losses. Lehman's failure triggered the global crisis, but if it had not been Lehman it could have been the losses caused by these three fraud epidemics at any of roughly a dozen large financial firms that would have been trigger. ... Is the establishment's fervent hatred of Donald Trump starting a U-turn? It's still too early to know, however at least one core Republican, former house speaker John Boehner, has made it very clear he is not a fan of Ted Cruz. At all. 30 Years After the Chernobyl Disaster, a Nuclear Menace Still Hides in Plain Sight
Hp | Ioana Moldovan | 04/25/16

CHERNOBYL, Ukraine -- It was a fine spring night, people peacefully sleeping as weekday passed into weekend, until Chernobyl's fourth nuclear reactor blew up. Oleksandr Galuh recalls that night well. "My mother woke up as the windows shattered," Galuh, then a fourth-grader in Pripyat, a town not too far from Chernobyl, remembers. "She thought it was a thunderstorm."

But no thunder rocked the still of night -- an explosion did. It was April 26, 1986 at 1:23 a.m. when reactor no. 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant went up in flames. The worst nuclear accident in history had just taken place. ... Read more

CIA Employees 'Terrified,' Fear 'Exodus'...
HP | Andy Kroll | 04/26/16

When Donald Trump launched his bid for the White House, one of his earliest initiatives was a promise to help Americans who had gone to war for their country. Or, as his campaign put it, to take care of "all Veteran complaints very quickly and efficiently like a world-class business man can do, but a politician has no clue." Last summer, about a month after declaring his candidacy, Trump unveiled a hotline for veterans to share ideas about how to overhaul the bureaucracy that served them.

Many of the veterans who called the hotline--855-VETS-352--say they were sent to an automated voicemail message telling them to email the campaign. Those who reached a live human were similarly instructed to send an email, or to mail their medical records to campaign headquarters at Trump Tower. It soon became evident that Trump had no actual plan in place to help anyone who contacted him through the hotline. ... Read more

Obama in Germany to Push TTIP
TRNN | author | 04/26/16

Obama?s arrival in Germany on Sunday was met by 90,000 protesters who are opposing the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership or TTIP. Obama came to Germany to support the government in its effort to ratify the free trade agreement despite opposition to the deal by majority of the population in both countries. Many Germans see the deal as an effort to undermine German health and safety regulations for the benefit of corporate profits. Only 17 percent of Germans support the TTIP according to a recent poll.

The other item on Obama's agenda with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel was a deal to increase patrols off of the Libyan coast in order to prevent smugglers from risking more lives of refugees who are trying to reach Europe. Last week it was suspected that up to 500 refugees drowned when their ship sank near Libya. ...

China Commodity Bubble Bursts As Exchanges Curb Goldman's "Biggest Concern"
ZeroHedge | author | 04/26/16

During the last week we have highlighted the frightening similarity between the speculative spike in China commodity trading (which has sent industrial metals prices soaring in yet another 'error' signal for real supply and demand) and the pump-n-dump in Chinese stocks. Specifically, as Goldman warns the factor that "concerns us the most is the increased speculation in the Chinese iron ore futures market," and now, as Bloomberg reports, it appears that bubble is bursting as Steel and Iron Ore prices tumble most in 21 months after Chinese exchanges raise margins in an attempt to curb speculation. ... *People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy by Robert W McChesney & John Nichols

The consequences of the technological revolution are about to hit hard: unemployment will spike as new technologies replace labor in the manufacturing, service, and professional sectors of an economy that is already struggling. The end of work as we know it will hit at the worst moment imaginable: as capitalism fosters permanent stagnation, when the labor market is in decrepit shape, with declining wages, expanding poverty, and scorching inequality. Only the dramatic democratization of our economy can address the existential challenges we now face. Yet, the US political process is so dominated by billionaires and corporate special interests, by corruption and monopoly, that it stymies not just democracy but progress.

The great challenge of these times is to ensure that the tremendous benefits of technological progress are employed to serve the whole of humanity, rather than to enrich the wealthy few. Robert W. McChesney and John Nichols argue that the United States needs a new economy in which revolutionary technologies are applied to effectively address environmental and social problems and used to rejuvenate and extend democratic institutions. Based on intense reporting, rich historical analysis, and deep understanding of the technological and social changes that are unfolding, they propose a bold strategy for democratizing our digital destiny -- before it's too late -- and unleashing the real power of the Internet, and of humanity.

Seymour Hersh The Killing of Osama Bin Laden
The Killing of Osama Bin Laden by Seymour M. Hersh

In 2011, an elite group of US Navy SEALS stormed an enclosure in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad and killed Osama bin Laden, the man the United States had begun chasing before the devastating attacks of 9/11. The news did much to boost President Obama's first term and played a major part in his reelection victory of the following year. But much of the story of that night, as presented to the world, was incomplete, or a lie. The evidence of what actually went on remains hidden.

At the same time, the full story of the United States' involvement in the Syrian civil war has been kept behind a diplomatic curtain, concealed by doublespeak. It is a policy of obfuscation that has compelled the White House to turn a blind eye to Turkey's involvement in supporting ISIS and its predecessors in Syria.

This investigation, which began as a series of essays in the London Review of Books, has ignited a firestorm of controversy in the world media. In his introduction, Hersh asks what will be the legacy of Obama's time in office. Was it an era of "change we can believe in" or a season of lies and compromises that continued George W. Exclusive Interview: Seymour Hersh Dishes on Saudi Oil Money Bribes and the Killing of Osama Bin Laden
AlterNet | Ken Klippenstein | 04/20/16

A wide-ranging interview tied to his new book, "The Killing of Osama Bin Laden."

Seymour Hersh is an American investigative journalist who is the recipient of many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for his article exposing the My Lai massacre by the U.S. military in Vietnam. More recently, he exposed the U.S. government's abuse of detainees in the Abu Ghraib prison facility.

Hersh's new book, The Killing of Osama Bin Laden, is a corrective to the official account of the war on terror. Drawing from accounts of a number of high-level military officials, Hersh challenges a number of commonly accepted narratives: that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the Sarin gas attack in Ghouta; that the Pakistani government didn't know Bin Laden was in the country; that the late ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in a solely diplomatic capacity; and that Assad did not want to give up his chemical weapons until the U.S. called on him to do so. ... HP | Willa Frej |04/20/16

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton performed well among New York primary voters who believe that Wall Street is a boon for the economy, according to exit polling data.

*Why Isn't Everyone in Favor of Taxing Financial Speculation?
HP | Robert Reich | 04/19/16

Buying and selling stocks and bonds in order to beat others who are buying and selling stocks and bonds is a giant zero-sum game that wastes countless resources, uses up the talents of some of the nation's best and brightest, and subjects financial markets to unnecessary risk.

High-speed traders who employ advanced technologies in order to get information a millisecond before other traders get it don't make financial markets more efficient. They make them more vulnerable to debacles like the "Flash Crash" of May 2010.

Wall Street Insiders who trade on confidential information unavailable to small investors don't improve the productivity of financial markets. They just rig the game for themselves. Bankers who trade in ever more complex derivatives -- making bets on bets -- don't add real value. They only make the system more vulnerable to big losses, as occurred in the financial crisis of 2008. ... Read more

Everything Is Rigged: The Biggest Price-Fixing Scandal Ever
Rolling Stone | Matt Taibbi | 04/25/13

The Illuminati were amateurs. The second huge financial scandal of the year reveals the real international conspiracy: There's no price the big banks can't fix

Conspiracy theorists of the world, believers in the hidden hands of the Rothschilds and the Masons and the Illuminati, we skeptics owe you an apology. You were right. The players may be a little different, but your basic premise is correct: The world is a rigged game. We found this out in recent months, when a series of related corruption stories spilled out of the financial sector, suggesting the world's largest banks may be fixing the prices of, well, just about everything. ... After a midlife crisis at age 50, he began to believe in the moral teachings of Christianity, while rejecting mysticism and organized religion. Trump orders new campaign hierarchy, spending plan
Politico | Kenneth P. Vogel | 04/18/16

In a shakeup that's roiling Donald Trump's presidential campaign, the GOP front-runner told senior staffers at a Saturday meeting that he wants his recent hires Paul Manafort and Rick Wiley to take the reins in upcoming states, giving them a $20-million budget for key contests in May and June, according to three sources with knowledge of the meeting. ...

... But sources inside the Trump campaign said the moves are increasingly alienating staff loyal to the original team headed by campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, which had guided Trump from the political fringe to the precipice of the GOP presidential nomination with relatively little campaign infrastructure or spending.

One key Lewandowski loyalist, national field director Stuart Jolly, on Monday submitted a letter of resignation, according to the sources, who characterized Jolly as displeased with the reorganization. Under the new structure, Jolly would have reported to Wiley, who was hired last week by Manafort as political director. In turn, Wiley, who previously ran Scott Walker's disappointing presidential campaign, will report to Manafort, who was hired late last month and quickly boasted "I work directly for the boss." ... HP | Nick Visser | 04/18/16

Only 6 percent of people say they have a great deal of confidence in the press, about the same level of trust Americans have in Congress, according to a new survey released on Sunday.

The study mirrors past reports that found the public's trust in mass media has reached historic lows, according to data gathered by the Media Insight Project, a partnership between The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the American Press Institute. The report found faith in the press was just slightly higher than the 4 percent of people who said they trusted Congress. ... Read more

The Elephant's Not Even In The Room Yet
ZeroHedge | author | 04/18/16

The elephant outside the room is named Discontinuity. That's perhaps an intimidating word, but it is exactly what the USA is in for. It means that a lot of familiar things come to an end, stop, don't work the way they are supposed to - beginning, manifestly, with the election process now underway in all its unprecedented bizarreness. One reason it's difficult to comprehend discontinuity is because so many operations and institutions of daily life in America have insidiously become rackets, meaning that they are kept going only by dishonest means. If we didn't lie to ourselves about them, they couldn't continue. ... Read more

Why World Leaders Are Terrified of Water Shortages
MotherJones | Nathan Halverson | 04/14/16

Secret conversations between American diplomats show how a growing water crisis in the Middle East destabilized the region, helping spark civil wars in Syria and Yemen, and how those water shortages are spreading to the United States.

Classified US cables reviewed by Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting show a mounting concern by global political and business leaders that water shortages could spark unrest across the world, with dire consequences. Many of the cables read like diary entries from an apocalyptic sci-fi novel. ...

... Almarai, which is Saudi Arabia's largest dairy company and has publicly said it's following the king's directive, began pumping up billions of gallons of water in the Arizona desert in 2014 to grow hay that it exports back to the Middle East. Analysts refer to this as exporting "virtual water." It is more cost effective to use the Arizona water to irrigate land in America and ship the hay to Saudi Arabia than it is to fill a fleet of oil tankers with the water.

Arizonans living near Almarai's hay operation say their groundwater is dropping fast as the Saudis and other foreign companies increase production. They are now worried their domestic wells might suffer the same fate as those in Syria and Yemen. ... Read more

While WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange battles to avoid extradition from the United Kingdom to Sweden, on the other side of the Atlantic Bradley Manning is facing a court martial. If found guilty Manning could spend the rest of his life in prison.

It's a case that has all the hallmarks of a spy thriller. Bradley Manning was an American soldier serving in Iraq, when he allegedly downloaded classified military files onto a disk storing Lady Gaga songs. A short time later the authorities arrested Manning and he's been in a military jail ever since.

Early last year reporter Quentin McDermott told the story of Bradley Manning and the people who'd helped the United States government build a case against him. This film uncovers crucial new elements describing the ferocious battle between hackers and the U.S. government as they pursue Julian Assange and WikiLeaks.

The Fed Sends A Frightening Letter To JPMorgan, Corporate Media Yawns
ZeroHedge | author | 04/15/16

Yesterday the Federal Reserve released a 19-page letter that it and the FDIC had issued to Jamie Dimon, the Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, on April 12 as a result of its failure to present a credible plan for winding itself down if the bank failed. The letter carried frightening passages and large blocks of redacted material in critical areas, instilling in any careful reader a sense of panic about the U.S. financial system. The Federal regulators didn't say JPMorgan could pose a threat to its shareholders or Wall Street or the markets. It said the potential threat was to "the financial stability of the United States." ... Read more

Noam Chomsky: This Is the Propaganda System That Corporate Media Uses to Dominate Society
AlterNet | Andrew Smolski | 04/14/16

... Take a look at the structure of the media system. The major media institutions are great corporations, some of them parts of megacorporations. Like other businesses, they sell a product to a market. The product that they sell is audiences. The market is other corporations, because they survive pretty much on advertising in the modern period. It wasn't always like this. There are other external influences, primarily state power, which itself is very heavily under corporate control, and which has its own propaganda institutions, called public diplomacy or something like that. ... New Documents Show Oil Industry Even More Evil Than We Thought
HP | Chris D'Angelo | 04/14/16

In 1968, a pair of scientists from Stanford Research Institute wrote a report for the American Petroleum Institute, a trade association for America's oil and natural gas industry. They warned that "man is now engaged in a vast geophysical experiment with his environment, the earth" -- one that "may be the cause of serious world-wide environmental changes."

The scientists went on: "If the Earth's temperature increases significantly, a number of events might be expected to occur including the melting of the Antarctic ice cap, a rise in sea levels, warming of the oceans and an increase in photosynthesis."

That 48-year-old report, which accurately foreshadowed what's now happening, is among a trove of public documents uncovered and released Wednesday by the Washington-based Center for International Environmental Law. Taken together, documents that the organization has assembled show that oil executives were well aware of the serious climate risks associated with carbon dioxide emissions decades earlier than previously documented -- and they covered it up. ... "This announcement is a very big deal. It's scary," Warren said in a written statement. "After an extensive, multi-year review process, federal regulators concluded that five of the country's biggest banks are still -- literally -- too big to fail. They officially determined that five U.S. banks are large enough that any one of them could crash the economy again if they started to fail and were not bailed out." ... Read more

IMF Warns of Possible New Financial Crisis in Europe
TRNN | author | 04/14/16

Another global financial crisis could unfold at any moment. That's according to a new report from the International Monetary Fund. The semi-annual Global Financial Stability Report says a third of Eurozone banks face major problems with their financial viability. A trillion dollars worth of outstanding loans in these banks are unprofitable and could face default. Most of the banks holding these loans are in Greece, Italy, and Portugal, though a few critical banks are also located in Germany. José Viñals, the IMF Director who presented the report, explained that there are three main reasons for the increased risk.

"Risks to global financial stability have increased over the last six months and this is due to three main factors. First, higher macro-economic risks, in the context of weaker growth and inflation. Second, falling commodity prices and increasing concerns about China, which have put pressure on emergening markets and credit markets in advanced economies. And third, lower confidence in policies and in policy traction, in an environment of higher financial and economic and political and geopolitical risks." ... Read more

The race for president in the U.S. in in many ways a contest for delegates. It starts with the state primaries and caucuses but it doesn't end there. There's also the delegate selection process -- who actually goes to the conventions -- and this year, that question could be key. On the Republican side, an open or contested convention looks like a real possibility for the first time in decades. That means those delegates have an outsize importance. For Democrats, there's the question of superdelegates and which candidate they will back.

Donald Trump Slams RNC, Calls Delegate Process A 'Scam' And 'Disgrace'
HP | Igor Bobic | 04/13/16

"These are dirty tricksters! This is a dirty trick."

Still peeved at being out-organized by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in Colorado, GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump is crying foul and blaming the system for his campaign's failures.

"These are dirty tricksters! This is a dirty trick," he said at a campaign stop in Rome, New York, on Tuesday evening, blasting the GOP after all 34 of Colorado's delegates went to Cruz. "The RNC, the Republican National Committee, they should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this kind of crap to happen!" ... Read more

On Sunday, thousands of activists from around the country arrived right here in Washington, D.C. after a 10-day-long, 140 mile march from Philadelphia. The marchers are part of a movement called Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening, and today they staged a sit-in at the Capitol Building. They plan on camping out there through the end of the week. All of this is part of a massive, non-violent campaign to save our democracy from oligarchy. Democracy Spring activists are calling on Congress to take action right now on a group of different bills that would take money out of politics once-and-for-all. This fight, the fight against corporate control over our democracy, is, of course, the same fight that Bernie Sanders is fighting right now in his presidential campaign. But it's also the same fight that the Founders fought more than 200 years ago when they rebelled against the British Empire and created our constitutional republic. They just called it something different -- they called it the fight against "faction."

19 Signs That American Families Are Being Economically Destroyed
ZeroHedge| author | 04/12/16

The systematic destruction of the American way of life is happening all around us, and yet most people have no idea what is happening.

Once upon a time in America, if you were responsible and hard working you could get a good paying job that could support a middle class lifestyle for an entire family even if you only had a high school education. Things weren't perfect, but generally almost everyone in the entire country was able to take care of themselves without government assistance. ...

  1. The poorest 40 percent of all Americans now spend more than 50 percent of their incomes just on food and housing.
  2. For those Americans that don't own a home, 50 percent of them spend more than a third of their incomes just on rent.
  3. The price of school lunches has risen to the 3 dollar mark at many public schools across the nation.
  4. McDonald's "Dollar Menu & More" now includes items that cost as much as 5 dollars.
  5. The price of ground beef has doubled since 2009.
  6. In 1986, child care expenses for families with employed mothers used up 6.3 percent of all income. Today, that figure is up to 7.2 percent.
  7. Incomes fell for the bottom 80 percent of all income earners in the United States during the 12 months leading up to June 2014.
  8. At this point, more than 50 percent of all American workers bring home less than $30,000 a year in wages.
  9. After adjusting for inflation, median household income has fallen by nearly $5,000 since 2007.
  10. According to the New York Times, the "typical American household" is now worth 36 percent less than it was worth a decade ago.
  11. 47 percent of all Americans do not put a single penny out of their paychecks into savings.
  12. One survey found that 62 percent of all Americans are currently living paycheck to paycheck.
  13. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 33 percent of all Americans with student loans are currently behind on their student loan debt repayments.
  14. According to one recent report, 43 million Americans currently have unpaid medical debt on their credit reports.
  15. The rate of homeownership in the U.S. has been declining for seven years in a row, and it is now the lowest that it has been in 20 years.
  16. For each of the past six years, more businesses have closed in the United States than have opened. Prior to 2008, this had never happened before in all of U.S. history.
  17. According to the Census Bureau, 65 percent of all children in the United States are living in a home that receives some form of aid from the federal government.
  18. If you have no debt at all, and you also have 10 dollars in your wallet, that you are wealthier than 25 percent of all Americans.
  19. On top of everything else, the average American must work from January 1st to April 24th just to pay all federal, state and local taxes.

Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex by William D. Hartung

When President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his famous warning about the dangers of the military-industrial complex, he never would have dreamed that a single company could accumulate the kind of power and influence that is now wielded by Lockheed Martin. As a full-service weapons maker, Lockheed Martin receives over $29 billion a year in Pentagon contracts, or roughly one out of every ten dollars the Department of Defense doles out to private contractors. Prophets of War recounts the fascinating and often-frightening history of America's largest military contractor as well as its role in the formation of foreign policy.

The company has produced spy satellites; helped the Pentagon collect personal data on U.S. citizens; provided interrogators for employment at Guantanamo Bay; manufactured our highest-tech aircraft; and more. It has also been embroiled in numerous scandals — from bribing officials in the Netherlands, Italy, and Japan in exchange for the purchase of Lockheed airplanes in the 1970s, to the provision of $600 toilet covers and $7,000 coffee makers to the Pentagon in the 1980s.

William D. Hartung's enthralling exposé chronicles the growth of Lockheed Martin into one of the most influential corporations in the world, and examines the pivotal role the company has had in America's metastasizing military industrial complex. It asks: How has one company become the recipient of such a large portion of America's tax dollars through contracts with the Pentagon, NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Energy, the NSA, and even the U.S. Census and the IRS? Hartung's meticulous, hard-hitting history follows Lockheed Martin's meteoric growth and unravels how this arms industry giant has helped shape U.S. foreign policy for decades.

How Not to Audit the Pentagon
HP | William Hartung | 04/10/16

Five Decades Later, the Military Waste Machine Is Running Full Speed Ahead

From spending $150 million on private villas for a handful of personnel in Afghanistan to blowing $2.7 billion on an air surveillance balloon that doesn't work, the latest revelations of waste at the Pentagon are just the most recent howlers in a long line of similar stories stretching back at least five decades. Other hot-off-the-presses examples would include the Army's purchase of helicopter gears worth $500 each for $8,000 each and the accumulation of billions of dollars' worth of weapons components that will never be used. And then there's the one that would have to be everyone's favorite Pentagon waste story: the spending of $50,000 to investigate the bomb-detecting capabilities of African elephants. (And here's a shock: they didn't turn out to be that great!) The elephant research, of course, represents chump change in the Pentagon's wastage sweepstakes and in the context of its $600-billion-plus budget, but think of it as indicative of the absurd lengths the Department of Defense will go to when what's at stake is throwing away taxpayer dollars.

Keep in mind that the above examples are just the tip of the tip of a titanic iceberg of military waste. In a recent report I did for the Center for International Policy, I identified 27 recent examples of such wasteful spending totaling over $33 billion. And that was no more than a sampling of everyday life in the twenty-first-century world of the Pentagon. ... Read more

Bernie and the Big Banks
HP | Robert Reich | 04/10/16

The recent kerfluffle about Bernie Sanders purportedly not knowing how to bust up the big banks says far more about the threat Sanders poses to the Democratic establishment and its Wall Street wing than it does about the candidate himself. Of course Sanders knows how to bust up the big banks. He's already introduced legislation to do just that. And even without new legislation a president has the power under the Dodd-Frank reform act to initiate such a breakup.

The biggest are far larger today than they were in 2008 when they were deemed "too big to fail." Then, the five largest held around 30 percent of all U.S. banking assets. Today they have 44 percent. Read more

Supply Chain Slump "Worse Than The Great Recession"
ZeroHedge | author | 04/11/16

Not to continue beating a dead horse, but I have a stick and the carcass is right in front of me. The entire supply chain inside the US economy is full agreement both on where the economy is right now and, perhaps more importantly, how it came to be that way. Such harmony is not atypical, as synchronicity usually defines the hard edges of any cycle. Goldman Slammed With $5.1 Billion Fine For "Serious Misconduct" In Mortgage Selling
ZeroHedge | author | 04/11/16

Hot on the heels of Wells Fargo's $1.2 billion settlement, Bloomberg reports that Goldman Sachs will pay $5.1 billion to settle a U.S. probe into its handling of mortgage-backed securities involving allegations that loans weren't properly vetted before being sold to investors as high-quality bonds. "This resolution holds Goldman Sachs accountable for its serious misconduct in falsely assuring investors that securities it sold were backed by sound mortgages, when it knew that they were full of mortgages that were likely to fail," said Acting Associate Attorney General Stuart Delery. ... America's War for the Greater Middle East: A Military History Hardcover by Andrew J. Bacevich

During the 1980s, Bacevich argues, a great transition occurred. As the Cold War wound down, the United States initiated a new conflict--a War for the Greater Middle East--that continues to the present day. The long twilight struggle with the Soviet Union had involved only occasional and sporadic fighting. But as this new war unfolded, hostilities became persistent. From the Balkans and East Africa to the Persian Gulf and Central Asia, U.S. forces embarked upon a seemingly endless series of campaigns across the Islamic world. Few achieved anything remotely like conclusive success. Instead, actions undertaken with expectations of promoting peace and stability produced just the opposite. As a consequence, phrases like "permanent war" and "open-ended war" have become part of everyday discourse.

Connecting the dots in a way no other historian has done before, Bacevich weaves a compelling narrative out of episodes as varied as the Beirut bombing of 1983, the Mogadishu firefight of 1993, the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the rise of ISIS in the present decade. Understanding what America's costly military exertions have wrought requires seeing these seemingly discrete events as parts of a single war. It also requires identifying the errors of judgment made by political leaders in both parties and by senior military officers who share responsibility for what has become a monumental march to folly. This Bacevich unflinchingly does.

A twenty-year army veteran who served in Vietnam, Andrew J. Bacevich brings the full weight of his expertise to this vitally important subject. America's War for the Greater Middle East is a bracing after-action report from the front lines of history. It will fundamentally change the way we view America's engagement in the world's most volatile region.

As the Panama Papers appear to show, the very wealthy play by an entirely different set of rules than the average person when it comes to paying taxes. The role of global banks has been a prominent feature of early reporting on the Panama files, reinforcing the impression of the entire sector as one big, risky rip-off machine, preying on consumers and governments to maximize profit. The scandal is only the latest in a series of almost countless ones, most of which were settled with fines and no admission of guilt. There is hardly a global financial market that has not been systematically manipulated by major Wall Street firms: interest rates, foreign exchange, metals, electricity -- the list goes on. ... Obama's Nuclear Security Summit Neglects 98 Percent of the World's Bomb-Ready Uranium
TheIntercept | Alex Emmons | 04/01/16

fourth and final nuclear security summit taking place this week, world leaders are confronting the danger posed by nuclear terrorism -- specifically, by reducing the ways that terrorists could get their hands on the uranium they would need to build a nuclear bomb.

But critics have pointed out that the summits have only focused on highly enriched uranium in civilian possession, which, according to the Department of Energy, only accounts for 2 to 3 percent of the world's supply. That small percentage is used mostly by academics for research and medical isotope production.

The remaining 97 to 98 percent is held in military stockpiles, which the security summits have largely ignored. Countries keep the safeguards on these stockpiles secret, and military material falls outside the scope of international security agreements. ... Read more

Money in Politics Is a Crisis. Three Bills That Would Solve the Crisis of Money in Politics
HP | Nick Penniman | 04/04/16

Let's stop giving members of Congress a pass. Here's what I mean: While the media, and even the presidential candidates themselves, rail against super PACs, our democracy is being hollowed out by a problem that existed long before Citizens United -- "hard money" fundraising by Congress.

"Hard money" refers to contributions given directly to a candidate's campaign, rather than outside political groups such as super PACs or dark money nonprofits. While direct campaign contributions are capped at $2,700 per election, these donations still comprised bulk of political giving in the 2014 midterms. ... Read more

Syrian Refugees Across The U.S. Are Condemning ISIS
HP | David Bier | 04/06/16

After the Paris terrorist attack, 31 governors said that they wanted no more Syrians admitted to their states. In the months since, Syrian refugees across the country had the opportunity to respond. Their message is simple: get to know us.

Nidal Alhayak was resettled outside of Detroit last year after he was tortured by the Assad regime. "I totally understand their fear," he told NPR last year. "We're not like that. We went through terror ourselves." Hasni, a Syrian refugee in Raleigh, still fears for his life. "If [ISIS militants] catch me," he told his local station, "absolutely, they kill me."

Linda, a Syrian who is living in Maryland, responded to her governor's decision to oppose Syrians in the Washington Post. "We, too, were appalled by the Islamic State's terrorist attacks in Paris and condemn them wholeheartedly. My family and I lived through horrific acts like these," she wrote after describing her own son's killing. ... Read more

TalkingStickTV | Chalmers Johnson - The Sorrows of Empire (older, 11/22/10) [58:37]
The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic by Chalmers Johnson

In the years after the Soviet Union imploded, the United States was described first as the globe's "lone superpower," then as a "reluctant sheriff," next as the "indispensable nation," and in the wake of 9/11, as a "New Rome." In this important national bestseller, Chalmers Johnson thoroughly explores the new militarism that is transforming America and compelling us to pick up the burden of empire.

Recalling the classic warnings against militarism-from George Washington's Farewell Address to Dwight Eisenhower's denunciation of the military-industrial complex-Johnson uncovers its roots deep in our past. Turning to the present, he maps America's expanding empire of military bases and the vast web of services that support them. He offers a vivid look at the new caste of professional militarists who have infiltrated multiple branches of government, who classify as "secret" everything they do, and for whom the manipulation of the military budget is of vital interest.

Among Johnson's provocative conclusions is that American militarism is already putting an end to the age of globalization and bankrupting the United States, even as it creates the conditions for a new century of virulent blowback. The Sorrows of Empire suggests that the former American republic has already crossed its Rubicon-with the Pentagon in the lead.

*Elizabeth Warren Lambasts Former Colleague In War Over Financial Rules
HP | Shahien Nasiripour | 04/05/16

There is a well-worn Washington playbook that the financial industry and Republicans use when they want to kill a proposal meant to protect households from dodgy financial practices: They claim the costs of the proposal exceed its benefits.

On Tuesday that strategy appeared to blow up in their faces when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) spent seven minutes skewering a former senior regulator at the Federal Reserve who she claimed played a "key role in blowing up the economy." Warren accused Leonard Chanin, a financial industry lawyer critical of post-crisis rules, of failing to police suspect subprime mortgage lending in the runup to the 2007-2009 financial crisis. ... Why would anyone seeking the Republican presidential nomination attack a network that reaches huge swaths of the Republican primary electorate?

But in a newly published article Sunday in New York Magazine, author and journalist Gabriel Sherman reveals how Trump came to possess ultra-insider information about Fox News and its founder, Roger Ailes, that could be damaging if it were ever to be made public. ... Read more

Donald Trump's Ratings Are Historically Awful
HP | Ariel Edwards-Levy | 03/31/16

Give Donald Trump credit: his candidacy may be unifying the country over dislike for him.

At this point, it might be easier to run down the list of demographic blocs Trump hasn't alienated. He's disliked by Democrats and independents, by young voters, and by minorities, not to mention even the female voters in his own party.

If he wins the GOP nomination, Trump wouldn't be the first nominee to enter a general election with negative ratings. He would, however, be the least popular major party nominee in modern times. The only recent candidate with comparably low ratings is former KKK leader David Duke, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 1992. ... Read more

AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.
