Seven Key Takeaways From Joseph E. Stiglitz’s Tax Plan for Growth and Equality
BillMoyers | author | 05/30/14

But taxes also shape our incentives. We tax things that we deem to be harmful -- like tobacco and alcohol -- and hand out tax breaks to encourage things we find beneficial, like research.

According to a new white paper by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz, our labyrinthine tax system is skewing those incentives. We’re encouraging corporations to invest in creating jobs overseas, when unemployment remains doggedly high here at home. We’re giving US-based multinationals good reason t0 deprive our treasury of revenues when we should be investing in infrastructure and the American people.

The full recommendations are available in Stiglitz’s report, Reforming Taxation to Promote Growth and Equity(PDF).

  1. Raise Corporate Income Tax Rates While Providing Incentives for Investments and Job Creation in the US
  2. Reduce Spending on Corporate Welfare
  3. Tax the Financial Sector
  4. Tax on Monopolies and Other Rent-Based Enterprises
  5. Ensure that Multinationals Pay Their Fair Share of Taxes and Have Incentives to Invest in America
  6. Increase Taxes on Industries That Produce Negative Externalities
  7. Make Dividend Payments Tax Deductible, But Impose a Withholding Tax

SWAT Lobby to Congress: Hands Off Our Mine-Resistant Vehicles!
TheDailyBeast.com | Tim Mak | 08/21/14

In an attempt to counter widespread concern over “militarized” local police departments, law enforcement groups are pressing Capitol Hill to not cut off the supply of armored vehicles, body armor and other military equipment to the nation’s cops.

This week, the National Tactical Officers Association, the lobbying group for 1,600 SWAT teams across the country, emailed all legislative staffers in the House and Senate to express that they shared in “our nation’s grief” over the events in Ferguson, Missouri. ... Read more

Neil deGrasse Tyson Hit by Creationist Backlash for Explaining Universe Is Billions of Years Old
AlterNet | Dan Arel | 08/20/14

In the wake of the success of the "Cosmos" television series, which picked up four Emmy Awards earlier this week, Neil deGrasse Tyson discussed politics, religion and science in a recent interview with AlterNet.

When I asked if the success of "Cosmos" had surprised him, Tyson said he had not anticipated the kind of coverage the show would get by entertainment sites and blogs. Because of the show's major network backing and primetime slot, he said, it was covered like any other television show. He said this forced many entertainment writers to write about all sorts of science topics not often covered in these publications, exposing the show to a new and possibly unintended audience.

... Tyson was not as shocked by the backlash the show garnered from certain religious and political groups, mainly creationists who took issue with Tyson’s insistence on discussing evolution, the Big Bang theory and the history of scientific discovery. Their criticism of the show did not bother Tyson at all. “You have to ask yourself, what are the numbers behind the people making these claims? Someone like Ken Ham [owner of the Creation Museum] has beliefs that are even crazy to many Christians.” ... Read more

Ruling on Nuclear Waste Storage Could Create a "Catastrophic Risk"
MotherJones | Josh Harkinson | 08/22/14

Strict safety controls sought by environmental groups for the storage of radioactive waste at dozens of nuclear power plants may fall to the wayside under a rule that's expected be approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission next week. According to a congressional source who does not wish to be identified, the NRC is rushing to vote on the rule before the September retirement of Commissioner William Magwood, an ally of the nuclear power industry.

The rule would establish that the environmental risks of storing spent fuel in pools of water at reactor sites for extended periods are negligible and for the most part don't need to be studied as part of the licensing requirements for nuclear power plants. But critics of the rule say that the NRC is blatantly ignoring its own research, which shows that the practice could lead to serious disasters: "You will have all the waste sitting, basically, in a giant swimming pool," the source says, "and the potential of the swimming pool draining or being breached by an accident or an attack or a power loss that causes the water to boil off—all of those things would have impacts that the NRC's own analysis says would equal that of a meltdown of the reactor core." ... Another Police Shooting in St. Louis: St. Louis Police Release Video Of Kajieme Powell Killing
HP | Ryan Grim | 08/20/14

... St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said Tuesday that both of the officers opened fire on Powell when he came within a three or four feet of them holding a knife "in an overhand grip." But the newly released cell phone footage undermines the statement, showing Powell approaching the cops, but not coming as close as was reported, with his hands at his side. The officers began shooting within 15 seconds of their arrival, hitting Powell with a barrage of bullets. ...

CNN's Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo pushed Dotson on the officers' decision to use lethal force, rather than opting for an alternate form of defense like a Taser. "Certainly a Taser is an option that's available to the officers, but Tasers aren't 100 percent," Dotson said. "So you've got an individual with a knife who's moving towards you, not listening to any verbal commands, continues, says, 'shoot me now, kill me now.' Tasers aren't 100 percent. if that Taser misses, that [individual] continues on and hurts an officer." ... Read more

Robert Reich: American Democracy Is Diseased
AlterNet | Robert Reich | 08/20/14

Americans are sick of politics. Only 13 percent approve of the job Congress is doing, a near record low. The President's approval ratings are also in the basement. A large portion of the public doesn't even bother voting. Only 57.5 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots in the 2012 presidential election.

Gilens and Page analyzed 1,799 policy issues in detail, determining the relative influence on them of economic elites, business groups, mass-based interest groups, and average citizens. Bank Of America Reaches Record $17 Billion Settlement With U.S.
HP & AP | Jeff Horwitz | 08/20/14

Bank of America has reached a record settlement of nearly $17 billion to resolve an investigation into its role in the sale of mortgage-backed securities before the 2008 financial crisis, officials directly familiar with the matter said Wednesday. One of the officials, who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement isn't scheduled until Thursday at the earliest, said the bank will pay $9.65 billion in cash and provide consumer relief valued at $7 billion.

The deal is the largest settlement arising from the economic meltdown in which millions of Americans lost their homes to foreclosure. It follows agreements in the last year with Citigroup for $7 billion and with JPMorgan Chase & Co. for $13 billion. ... Read more

*Bill Moyers | Joseph E. Stiglitz Calls for Fair Taxes for All (08/21/14) [25:25]
A recent report by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz for the Roosevelt Institute suggests that paying our fair share of taxes and cracking down on corporate tax dodgers could be a cure for inequality and a faltering economy.

This week on Moyers & Company, Stiglitz tells Bill Moyers that Apple, Google, GE and a host of other Fortune 500 companies are creating what amounts to "an unlimited IRA for corporations." The result? Vast amounts of lost revenue for our treasury and the exporting of much-needed jobs to other countries.

"I think we can use our tax system to create a better society, to be an expression of our true values," Stiglitz says. "But if people don't think that their tax system is fair, they're not going to want to contribute. It's going to be difficult to get them to pay. And, unfortunately, right now, our tax system is neither fair nor efficient."

The World According to Monsanto (full) () [1:49:02]
There's nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it -- it's strategic. It's more powerful than bombs. It's more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the "revolving door". One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company's vice president for public policy.

Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto's long arm stretched so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle concerns about their products include misleading advertising, bribery and concealing scientific evidence.

The question would arise while we were walking the beat with Iraqi police officers, manning checkpoints, or in our forward operating base after we went off-duty.

Invariably, my response went something like this: “Imagine that you’re back home, OK? Suddenly, you got a whole mess of Iraqi soldiers in your town. They’re all over the place, doing the same things we’re doing right now. How do you think you’d react? You’d probably get pretty hot, right?” ... Read more

Liberia fights Ebola in capital, West Africa toll tops 1,200
Reuters | Stephanie Nebehay | 08/19/14

Liberia battled on Tuesday to halt the spread of the Ebola disease in its crowded, run-down oceanside capital Monrovia, recording the most new deaths as fatalities from the world's worst outbreak of the deadly virus rose above 1,200.

The epidemic of the hemorrhagic disease, which can kill up to 90 percent of those it infects, is ravaging the three small West African states of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and also has a toehold in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy.

As the Geneva-based World Health Organization rushed to ramp up the global response to the outbreak first detected in March, including emergency food deliveries to quarantined zones, it announced that deaths from it had risen to 1,299 as of Aug. 16, out of 2,240 cases. ... Read more

A giant column of Russian aid trucks is headed for Ukraine — flanked by attack helicopters
vox.com | Max Fisher | 08/15/14

Russia is sending 280 trucks barreling toward eastern Ukraine as part of what it says is an aid convoy to help Ukrainian civilians effected by the worsening fighting there. But Ukrainian officials say they will not allow the trucks to cross into Ukraine because they believe they are a clandestine invasion force. It's not hard to see why: a few months earlier, Russia sent undercover special forces into the Ukrainian region of Crimea as the vanguard of a hostile invasion, which quickly annexed the territory.

Russia, never great at public relations abroad, is giving Ukraine reasons to worry, and not just because it is actively arming and supplying the eastern Ukrainian separatists who are causing the violence there. On Wednesday, for example, the aid convoy made a mysterious and unannounced stop at a Russian military base -- no one is sure why. Russia will not reveal the contents of the trucks. ... Read more

NAFTA Is 20 Years Old – Here Are 20 Facts That Show How It Is Destroying The Economy
ZeroHedge | author | 08/15/14

Back in the early 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement was one of the hottest political issues in the country. When he was running for president in 1992, Bill Clinton promised that NAFTA would result in an increase in the number of high quality jobs for Americans that it would reduce illegal immigration. Ross Perot warned that just the opposite would happen. He warned that if NAFTA was implemented there would be a "giant sucking sound" as thousands of businesses and millions of jobs left this country. Most Americans chose to believe Bill Clinton. Well, it is 20 years later and it turns out that Perot was right and Clinton was dead wrong.

  1. More than 845,000 American workers have been officially certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance because they lost their jobs due to imports from Mexico or Canada or because their factories were relocated to those nations.
  2. Overall, it is estimated that NAFTA has cost us well over a million jobs.
  3. U.S. manufacturers pay Mexican workers just a little over a dollar an hour to do jobs that American workers used to do.
  4. The number of illegal immigrants living in the United States has more than doubled since the implementation of NAFTA.
  5. In the year before NAFTA, the U.S. had a trade surplus with Mexico and the trade deficit with Canada was only 29.6 billion dollars. Last year, the U.S. had a combined trade deficit with Mexico and Canada of 177 billion dollars.
  6. It has been estimated that the U.S. economy loses approximately 9,000 jobs for every 1 billion dollars of goods that are imported from overseas.
  7. One professor has estimated that cutting the total U.S. trade deficit in half would create 5 million more jobs in the United States.
  8. Since the auto industry bailout, approximately 70 percent of all GM vehicles have been built outside the United States. In fact, many of them are now being built in Mexico.
  9. NAFTA hasn't worked out very well for Mexico either. Since 1994, the average yearly rate of economic growth in Mexico has been less than one percent.
  10. The exporting of massive amounts of government-subsidized U.S. corn down into Mexico has destroyed more than a million Mexican jobs and has helped fuel the continual rise in the number of illegal immigrants coming north.
  11. Someone making minimum wage in Mexico today can buy 38 percent fewer consumer goods than the day before NAFTA went into effect.
  12. Overall, the United States has lost a total of more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities since 2001.
  13. Back in the 1980s, more than 20 percent of the jobs in the United States were manufacturing jobs. Today, only about 9 percent of the jobs in the United States are manufacturing jobs.
  14. We have fewer Americans working in manufacturing today than we did in 1950 even though our population has more than doubled since then.
  15. Back in 1950, more than 80 percent of all men in the United States had jobs. Today, only 65 percent of all men in the United States have jobs.
  16. As I wrote about recently, one out of every six men in their prime working years (25 to 54) do not have a job at this point.
  17. Because we have shipped millions of jobs overseas, the competition for the jobs that remain has become extremely intense and this has put downward pressure on wages. Right now, half the country makes $27,520 a year or less from their jobs.
  18. When adults cannot get decent jobs, it is often children that suffer the most. It is hard to believe, but more than one out of every five children in the United States is living in poverty in 2014.
  19. In 1994, only 27 million Americans were on food stamps. Today, more than 46 million Americans are on food stamps.
  20. According to Professor Alan Blinder of Princeton University, 40 million more U.S. jobs could be sent offshore over the next two decades if current trends continue.

TYT | Russia Sends Hundreds Of Trucks To Ukrainian Border (08/15/14) [2:04]
"Russia is sending 280 trucks barreling toward eastern Ukraine as part of what it says is an aid convoy to help Ukrainian civilians effected by the worsening fighting there.

On Wednesday, for example, the aid convoy made a mysterious and unannounced stop at a Russian military base — no one is sure why. Russia will not reveal the contents of the trucks.
TYT | Ukraine Destroys Russian Military Convoy, Open Warfare Looms (08/15/14) [7:03]
"Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Friday that Ukrainian forces had attacked and destroyed part of a column of Russian military vehicles on Ukrainian territory, a step that, if confirmed, would represent a significant escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

Poroshenko told British Prime Minister David Cameron that “the majority” of a column of Russian military vehicles “had been destroyed by the Ukrainian artillery at night,” his office said in a statement. The announcement came as NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday that the defense alliance had seen an “incursion” into Ukraine the previous night.

The Kremlin denied Friday that there had been a border incursion, and a Russian military spokesman said that no Russian vehicles had been destroyed.“

TheLipTV | Sean Stone: CIA Secret Terror & the Shadow Government with Juval Aviv (04/11/14) [44:27]
What do the CIA, Hamas, the Mossad and Iran have in common? More than you may believe. CIA secrets of drugs, terror and the Lockerbie bombing, and the web of influence that has made political enemies into brothers in business through the shadow government is shared by retired Mossad agent, Juval Aviv. We also look at what the Russian government are really doing in Ukraine, US and Chinese government interest in Malaysia Flight 370, and more on this Buzzsaw interview hosted by Sean Stone.

Guest Bio:
Juval Aviv is an Israeli-American security consultant and writer. He may be best known for his work with the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, and for having conducted the counter-terrorist operation as detailed by George Jonas in his novel, Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team. Since 2003, Aviv has published four books related to security, two of which address notable mysteries. He writes under the nom-de-plume of Sam Green.
Shadow Government - Alex Jones DVDs
I don't normally post Alex Jones Show or his Videos, because he has gotten to extreme in his opinions. I can see how that can happen through frustration. But, since he is on the Right and I'm on the Left I rather stick with DemocracyNow, TRNN, Ring-of-Fire, Thom Hartmann, TYT, etc. However, I do like his videos for the historical information on the NWO and also exposing Secret Societies, i.e. Freemason, Illuminati, CFR, Trilateral Commission, Bilderberg, Bohemian Grove, Skull & Bones, etc.

Shadow Government - History
I found this 2hr video one of the best Histories on Secret Societies. If you are short on time, you can skip over the intro to 4:35, and if you are not particularly religious you can probably skip the ending, 2:17:00 to 2:26:14. Otherwise, the history is very well layed out.
*The New World Order- Secret Societies and Biblical Prophecy () [2:26:13]
The following video is part of the Zeitgeist Movement... this is Part 3. I particularly like the whole set of videos and will try to post them later this week. This video again reinforces the Histories on Secret Societies.

Jason Hall Organized a Movement.
I started Slow Roll to show Detroit in a positive light.
It takes heart to live in Detroit. Locals are quick to acknowledge their city’s challenges, and Jason Hall was no different. “I was feeling a bit beaten down by this city,” he says. But everything changed when a friend suggested he do the simplest thing: Take a bike ride to clear his head. “I got out and started to see Detroit in a different way,” he says. “On the ground level, you see the potential that exists. The city’s wide open for new ideas.”

I am one of those "once" middle class, over 60, over educated, under-employed, semi retired, soon to be poor workers, that everyone is talking about.
