What It Will Take for Hillary to Win the Debate
AlterNet | Steven Rosenfeld | 09/25/16

... Despite the hype, the stakes are enormous. Unless Clinton finds a way to connect with voters, especially the nearly one in three millennials now flocking to libertarian Gary Johnson, she may end losing in November because she's hovering in polls in the low 40s. If she tries to present herself in ways not yet seen by most Americans, she will likely fuel critics who say she cannot be trusted. Clinton can only be herself: prepared, concerned, wonkly, formidable, and maybe a bit wry.

Trump, in contrast, benefits from the biggest double-standard in recent American history. The public has grown used to his boasts, smears, over-promises, outright lies, and flailing antics. While the public expects Clinton to know everything about every topic and not be offputting, Trump will be let off the hook for an array of sloppy behaviors. Worse, if he doesn't loose his cool, his composure will likely be described by the GOP and pundits as a new sobriety, seriousness and debate victory. ... Read more

Debate Battle Plan: Show Up, No Dick Jokes

Here's Everything Donald Trump Has Promised to Do on His First Day as President
MotherJones | Tim Murphy | 09/23/16

  1. "Repeal every single Obama executive order." (He has also pledged more specifically to "eliminate every unconstitutional executive order.")
  2. "Repeal Obamacare." (On Trump's campaign website, he's less bullish, promising only to "ask Congress" on day one to repeal Obamacare immediately.)
  3. "End the war on coal."
  4. "Begin swiftly removing criminal illegal immigrants from this country." (More specifically, Trump has promised to do this in his "first hour" in office, "day one, before the wall, before anything.")
  5. "Begin working on an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall."
  6. Meet with Homeland Security officials and generals to begin securing the southern border.
  7. "Notify all countries that refuse to take back dangerous illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in this country that they will lose access to our visa programs if they continue to do so."
  8. Convene his top generals and inform them they have 30 days to come up with a plan to stop ISIS.
  9. Fix the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  10. Call the heads of major companies who are moving operations oversea to inform them that they'll face 35 percent tariffs.
  11. "Contact countries and say...'Folks, we love protecting you, we want to continue to protect you but you're not living up to the bargain'...They're not paying what they're supposed to be paying -- which is very little, by the way."
  12. "Defend the unborn."
  13. "Withdraw from TPP."
  14. "Start taking care of our...military."
  15. Suspend Syrian refugee resettlement.
  16. "Notify our NAFTA partners of my intention to renegotiate the deal."
  17. "Designate China as a currency manipulator."
  18. "Direct every agency in government to begin identifying all wasteful job-killing regulations, and they are going to be removed."
  19. "Get rid of gun-free zones [in] schools" and "military bases" -- which would require repealing a 25-year-old federal law. ("My first day, it gets signed, okay? My first day. There's no more gun-free zones.")
  20. "Ask Congress to pass 'Kate's Law' -- named for Kate Steinle -- to ensure that criminal aliens convicted of illegal reentry receive strong mandatory minimum sentences."
  21. Learn the difference between Hezbollah and Hamas.
  22. It's shaping up to be a busy day! Hillary Clinton, by contrast, has made only a few day-one promises, none of which is as concrete as shaking down European heads of state:
  23. -----
  24. "Tackle the gun lobby to try to reduce the outrageous number of people who are dying from gun violence in our country."
  25. "Reach out to Republicans and say, 'This is your chance to help millions of families and show that your party, the party of Lincoln, is better than Donald Trump.'"
  26. "Work with both parties to pass the biggest investment in new, good-paying jobs since World War II."

Playing by different rules: The media lets Trump "get out of jail free" but won't let Clinton "pass go"
Salon | Bob Cesca | 09/19/16

The press slams Clinton based on pre-2016 political standards, while Trump is judged on a much lower bar

The only explanation for the lopsided coverage of the election by the political press so far is that, for some mysterious reason-defying logic, there's a "false equivalence" at work. It's become an almost throw-away phrase, bearing little weight these days. The political press certainly doesn't take it too seriously, that's for sure. We're just gaming the refs, they say. Someone's always bitching about the media, they say. Whatever helps them sleep at night, I suppose.

Nevertheless, according to what we're observing online and via cable news, Hillary Clinton's negatives appear eons more grievous than Donald Trump's missteps, even though they're not -- and this disparity unfairly elevates Trump and his poll numbers. This is how elections are tilted toward despots and undisciplined strongmen. They're legitimized and humanized despite their long menu of unprecedented gaffes, lies and treachery. ... Read more

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the quiet part aloud on why he’s still so close to former President Donald Trump: because we can use him for our goals. "President Trump has gotten people who wouldn't give me or Romney or anybody else the time of day. They believe he is on their side," the senator told the America First Agenda Summit crowd on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics | AI - Artificial Intelligence
Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

Wall Street and Banksters

Wall Street is an eight-block-long street running roughly northwest to southeast from Broadway to South Street, at the East River, in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Over time, the term has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry (even if financial firms are not physically located there), or New York-based financial interests.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
