With Glencore, Commodity Rout Beginning to Look Like a Crisis
Bloomberg | Bradley Olson | 009/28/15

The 15-month commodities free-fall is starting to resemble a full-blown crisis. Investors are reacting to diminished demand from China and an end to the cheap-money era provided by the Federal Reserve. A Bloomberg index of commodity futures has fallen 50 percent since a 2011 high, and eight of the 10 worst performers in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index this year are commodities-related businesses.

Now it all seems to be coming apart at once. Alcoa Inc., the biggest U.S. aluminum producer, said it would break itself into two companies amid a glut stemming from booming production. Royal Dutch Shell Plc announced it would abandon its drilling campaign in U.S. Arctic waters after spending $7 billion. And the carnage culminated Monday with Glencore Plc, the commodities powerhouse that came to symbolize the era with its initial public offering in 2011 and bold acquisition of a rival in 2013, falling by as much as 31 percent in London trading. ... Who is Trafigura? Only the world's third largest private commodity trader after Vitol and Glencore.

First, a quick look at Trafigura bonds reveals that the contagion from the Glencore commodity-trader collapse, which "nobody could possibly predict" two months ago and which has rapidly become the market's biggest black swan, has spread and we now have a new contender. And while Trafigura's equity is privately held, it does have publicly-traded bonds. They just cratered: ... Read more

Paul Craig Roberts: Obama Deifies American Hegemony
ZeroHedge | author | 09/29/15

Today is the 70th anniversary of the UN. It is not clear how much good the UN has done. Some UN Blue Hemet peacekeeping operations had limited success. But mainly Washington has used the UN for war, such as the Korean War and Washington's Cold War against the Soviet Union. In our time Washington had UN tanks sent in against Bosnian Serbs during the period that Washington was dismantling Yugoslavia and Serbia and accusing Serbian leaders, who tried to defend the integrity of their country against Washington's aggression, of "war crimes." ... The Start Of China's Unrest? Southern China City Rocked By "Massive" Bomb Explosions, At Least 6 Dead
ZeroHedge | author | 09/30/15

Over the weekend when we reported that one of China's largest coal miners had laid off 100,000, or 40% of its workforce, we noted that China's hard-landing is starting to hit where it really hurts: employment, or rather the lack thereof, and the one logical consequence: "now, many migrant workers struggle to find their footing in a downshifting economy. As factories run out of money and construction projects turn idle across China, there has been a rise in the last thing Beijing wants to see: unrest." ... Read more

Reaganomics killed America's middle class
Salon & AlterNet | Thom Hartmann | older, 04/19/14

There's nothing "normal" about having a middle class. Having a middle class is a choice that a society has to make, and it's a choice we need to make again in this generation, if we want to stop the destruction of the remnants of the last generation's middle class.

Despite what you might read in the Wall Street Journal or see on Fox News, capitalism is not an economic system that produces a middle class. In fact, if left to its own devices, capitalism tends towards vast levels of inequality and monopoly. The natural and most stable state of capitalism actually looks a lot like the Victorian England depicted in Charles Dickens' novels.

At the top there is a very small class of superrich. Below them, there is a slightly larger, but still very small, "middle" class of professionals and mercantilists -- doctor, lawyers, shop-owners -- who help keep things running for the superrich and supply the working poor with their needs. And at the very bottom there is the great mass of people -- typically over 90 percent of the population -- who make up the working poor. They have no wealth -- in fact they're typically in debt most of their lives -- and can barely survive on what little money they make.

You can see this trend today in America. When we had heavily regulated and taxed capitalism in the post-war era, the largest employer in America was General Motors, and they paid working people what would be, in today's dollars, about $50 an hour with benefits. Reagan began deregulating and cutting taxes on capitalism in 1981, and today, with more classical "raw capitalism," what we call "Reaganomics," or "supply side economics," our nation's largest employer is WalMart and they pay around $10 an hour. ... ... Why The Fed Can't Stop The Next Market Crash
ZeroHedge | author | 09/29/15

... The Fed was late to prevent the popping of the last two bubbles, and it's already too late to stop the popping of this one. The Fed is consistently behind on the timing of when to reintroduce stimulus because its only choice to deal with the bubble it's created is let it crash, or blow it up even bigger which would result in an even harder landing. While the Fed ponders when the rate hike comes, our question is: When does QE4 start? ... Read more

From John Boehner To Government Shutdown, 2016 Campaign Is Pushing Congress To The Edge

The race to capture the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 has left candidates jockeying to be the ultimate outsider, playing to the hearts of voters fed up with politics as usual. And one of the most battered targets of those candidates is Boehner.

Why isn't the government securing the border? Boehner. Why isn't Obamacare or Planned Parenthood defunded? Boehner. The outright disgust at those in the old guard, or those who have served entire careers in elected office, is a wave that candidates like Donald Trump, Carly Fiorina and Ben Carson are riding eagerly, proclaiming their outsider status with angry taunts at immigrants, Muslims, and establishment Republicans. ... Exxon: The Road Not Taken

Exxon's Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuels' Role in Global Warming Decades Ago

At a meeting in Exxon Corporation's headquarters, a senior company scientist named James F. Black addressed an audience of powerful oilmen. Speaking without a text as he flipped through detailed slides, Black delivered a sobering message: carbon dioxide from the world's use of fossil fuels would warm the planet and could eventually endanger humanity.

"In the first place, there is general scientific agreement that the most likely manner in which mankind is influencing the global climate is through carbon dioxide release from the burning of fossil fuels," Black told Exxon's Management Committee, according to a written version he recorded later.

It was July 1977 when Exxon's leaders received this blunt assessment, well before most of the world had heard of the looming climate crisis. ... Read more

UBS Is About To Blow The Cover On A Massive Gold-Rigging Scandal
ZeroHedge | author | 09/28/15

Unlike previous gold probe cases, this one will have major consequences. How do we know? Because just like in LIBOR-gate, just like in FX-gate, it is the biggest rat of all, Swiss megabank UBS, that is about to turn on its former criminal peers. As Bloomberg reported earlier "UBS was granted conditional leniency in Swiss antitrust probe of possible manipulation of precious metal prices." Why would UBS do this? The same reason UBS did so on at least on two prior occasions: the regulators have definitive proof it is involved, and gave it the option to turn evidence and to rat out its cartel peers, or face even more massive financial penalties. UBS, as usual, choice the former. ... Read more

Jeb Bush: The Pope Shouldn't Discuss Climate Change Because 'He's Not A Scientist'
HP | Marina Fang | 09/24/15

"Put aside Pope Francis on the subject of any political conversation," he said. "I oppose the president's policy as it relates to climate change because it will destroy the ability to re-industrialize the country, to allow for people to get higher wage jobs, for people to rise up."

Bush, who is Catholic, was one of several GOP candidates who saw Francis during his visit to Washington, D.C. During his three-day U.S. trip, the pontiff has made climate change a key part of his message. In his address to Congress on Thursday, he called on leaders to take "courageous actions and strategies" to address and combat climate change. ...

... Remember GOP presidential candidate and former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) made the same accusation as Bush, saying that the pontiff should "leave science to the scientists." The Stock Markets Of The 10 Largest Global Economies Are All Crashing
ZeroHedge | author | 09/25/15

Right now, stock market wealth is being wiped out all over the planet, and none of the largest global economies have been exempt from this. The following is a summary of what we have seen in recent days...

  1. The United States -- The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down more than 2000 points since the peak of the market. Last month we saw stocks decline by more than 500 points on consecutive trading days for the first time ever, and there has not been this much turmoil in U.S. markets since the fall of 2008.
  2. China -- The Shanghai Composite Index has plummeted nearly 40 percent since hitting a peak earlier this year. The Chinese economy is steadily slowing down, and we just learned that China's manufacturing index has hit a 78 month low.
  3. Japan -- The Nikkei has experienced extremely violent moves recently, and it is now down more than 3000 points from the peak that was hit earlier in 2015. The Japanese economy and the Japanese financial system are both basket cases at this point, and it isn't going to take much to push Japan into a full-blown financial collapse.
  4. Germany -- Almost one-fourth of the value of German stocks has already been wiped out, and this crash threatens to get much worse. The Volkswagen emissions scandal is making headlines all over the globe, and don't forget to watch for massive trouble at Germany's biggest bank.
  5. The United Kingdom -- British stocks are down about 16 percent from the peak of the market, and the UK economy is definitely on shaky ground.
  6. France -- French stocks have declined nearly 18 percent, and it has become exceedingly apparent that France is on the exact same path that Greece has already gone down.
  7. Brazil -- Brazil is the epicenter of the South American financial crisis of 2015. Stocks in Brazil have plunged more than 12,000 points since the peak, and the nation has already officially entered a new recession.
  8. Italy -- Watch Italy. Italian stocks are already down 15 percent, and look for the Italian economy to make very big headlines in the months ahead.
  9. India -- Stocks in India have now dropped close to 4000 points, and analysts are deeply concerned about this major exporting nation as global trade continues to contract.
  10. Russia -- Even though the price of oil has crashed, Russia is actually doing better than almost everyone else on this list. Russian stocks have fallen by about 10 percent so far, and if the price of oil stays this low the Russian financial system will continue to suffer.

What we are witnessing now is the continuation of a cycle of financial downturns that has happened every seven years. The following is a summary of how this cycle has played out over the past 50 years...

  1. It started in 1966 with a 20 percent stock market crash.
  2. Seven years later, the market lost another 45 percent (1973-74).
  3. Seven years later was the beginning of the "hard recession" (1980).
  4. Seven years later was the Black Monday crash of 1987.
  5. Seven years later was the bond market crash of 1994.
  6. Seven years later was 9/11 and the 2001 tech bubble collapse.
  7. Seven years later was the 2008 global financial collapse.

*Overwhelming the World with Good
HP | 09/23/15 | date

We usually think and talk about peace as the absence of bad things. Peace is a lack of war. Peace is a lack of violence. But true peace isn't just the absence of bad; it is the presence of good. Peace is people having their most-basic human needs met. Peace is people exchanging knowledge and ideas. Peace is people sharing an abiding and mutual respect. Peace is people working together toward a common goal.

Two days ago, the world celebrated its 34th International Day of Peace. Two days from now, leaders from around the globe will gather at the United Nations and pledge their commitment to 17 Sustainable Development Goals, among them, Goal 16, promoting peace and justice. This week, then, is a perfect occasion for us to reflect on a concept that we all strive toward but whose true meaning often escapes us. ... Read more

*Pope Francis' First Whirlwind Day In U.S. Focused On Climate Change, Reconciliation

Cheered by jubilant crowds across the nation's capital, Pope Francis forged common cause Wednesday with President Barack Obama on climate change, immigration and inequality, as the popular pontiff signaled he would not sidestep issues that have deeply divided Americans.

Hundreds Killed In Stampede Outside Mecca
Reuters & HP & RT | Nidal al-Mughrabi | 09/24/15

MINA, Saudi Arabia, Sept 24 (Reuters) - At least 717 pilgrims were killed on Thursday in a stampede at Mina, outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, where some two million people are performing the annual haj pilgrimage, Saudi authorities said.

At least 805 others were injured in the crush, which occurred when two large groups of pilgrims arrived together at a crossroads on Street 204 at the camp city at Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, the Saudi civil defense said. The pilgrimage, the world's largest annual gathering of people, has been the scene of deadly disasters in the past, including stampedes, tent fires and riots. ... Read more

An Un"real" Move: Brazil Currency In Freefall After Record Low Consumer Confidence
magazine | author | date

On Wednesday, we got what might fairly be characterized as the first sign that Brazil has reached the point of no return. The country's recent woes are no secret and the S&P downgrade served notice to the entire world that that at least some very "serious" people believe that the negative feedback loop between the country's economic and political crises may soon serve to tip one of the world's most important emerging economies into chaos.

But what happened on Wednesday marked a new low. By almost all accounts, the move by Brazilian lawmakers to uphold 26 of President Dilma Rousseff's 32 expenditure vetoes should have given the plunging real some respite. Only it didn't. The BRL's harrowing slide continued unabated, forcing the central bank to intervene with swaps and an FX credit line in what Rabobank's Christian Lawrence says is a pretty clear sign of "panic". ... *US Intelligence Is More Privatized Than Ever Before
The Sign of Intelligence (older, 06/14/13) [0:28]

The Nation | Tim Shorrock | 09/16/15

Almost 14 years to the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks drove intelligence spending into the stratosphere, two of the largest business associations in the spying industry held a “summit” meeting to discuss the current state of national security. Two realities were immediately apparent.

First, US intelligence is more privatized than ever before, with for-profit corporations operating as an equal partner with the surveillance state at nearly every level.

And second, a more troubling theme that ran through the meeting. Americans are now more sensitive than ever before to the risks associated with contractors, from Edward Snowden’s leaking of NSA secrets to the recent hacking of a government database of 21 million federal workers that was supposedly protected by cybersecurity contractors. ... *Meet the Private Corporations Building Our Nuclear Arsenal
The Nation | Richard Krushnic | 09/21/15

Imagine for a moment a genuine absurdity: Somewhere in the United States, the highly profitable operations of a set of corporations were based on the possibility that sooner or later your neighborhood would be destroyed and you and all your neighbors annihilated. And not just you and your neighbors, but others and their neighbors across the planet. What would we think of such companies, of such a project, of the mega-profits made off it?

In fact, such companies do exist. They service the American nuclear weapons industry and the Pentagon’s vast arsenal of potentially world-destroying weaponry. They make massive profits doing so, live comfortable lives in our neighborhoods, and play an active role in Washington politics. ...

Rampant sexual abuse of children has long been a problem in Afghanistan, particularly among armed commanders who dominate much of the rural landscape and can bully the population. The practice is called bacha bazi, literally “boy play,” and American soldiers and Marines have been instructed not to intervene -- in some cases, not even when their Afghan allies have abused boys on military bases, according to interviews and court records.

The policy has endured as American forces have recruited and organized Afghan militias to help hold territory against the Taliban. But soldiers and Marines have been increasingly troubled that instead of weeding out pedophiles, the American military was arming them in some cases and placing them as the commanders of villages -- and doing little when they began abusing children.

This Is How Much Money We Need to Feed Millions of Syrian Refugees Right Now
MotherJones | James West | 09/22/15

On Monday, the chief of the United Nation's World Food Programme, the largest global provider of emergency food to the poor, announced that the program urgently needs $278 million over the next three months to feed millions of Syrian refugees. Even some of the neediest families, executive director Ertharin Cousin warned, will be cut off if the international community doesn't pony up.

The WFP's Syrian response, the biggest and most complex of its worldwide campaigns, has been crippled by the funding shortfall. The WFP expects to reach more than 4 million people within Syria by the end of this month; it also serves 1.6 million refugees in camps in neighboring countries. Most refugees fleeing Syria's civil war have found temporary shelter in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt, but as the camps grow more crowded and resources more scant, refugees have left in search of better conditions, sparking a crisis across Europe as nations debate how, or even whether, to shelter them. ... Jim Cramer did not trust the market rally on Monday. Somehow, all of the indicators that would normally be bad news for the averages ended up being good news, which was a red flag to Cramer that this rally is not sustainable. Monday's market activity prompted interest rates and oil prices to rise, the dollar gained strength versus the euro, financial stocks rallied and biotech stocks were crushed.

"How did these things suddenly become good? Because this market is trying to find a base, trying to find its footing where it doesn't go down every day and where segments that have been hit hard can attempt to rally," the "Mad Money" host explained. ... Read more

US to bring in new advanced nuclear bombs to Germany -- report
RT | author | 09/22/15

Starting third quarter 2015, the US Air Force is starting preparations to bring in new B61 nuclear bombs to Luftwaffe's Büchel Air Base, according to ZDF TV channel. German parliament previously called for American nukes to be removed.

The base in Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany hosts German Panavia Tornado multipurpose aircraft that are capable to deploy the USAF nuclear bombs stored there under a nuclear sharing deal. The base is the only location in Germany that has nuclear weapons since 2007 and has 20 of them, according to the Royal United Services Institute. ... Read more

George W. Bush to Lecture Intelligence Professionals. Really?

Capitalism
Does Capitalism REALLY Exist?
Bernie Sanders
Social democracy is a political ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a capitalist economy, and a policy regime involving welfare state provisions, collective bargaining arrangements, regulation of the economy in the general interest, redistribution of income and wealth, and a commitment to representative democracy. Social democracy aims to create the conditions for capitalism to lead to greater egalitarian, democratic and solidaristic outcomes. "Social democracy" is often used in this manner to refer to the social policies prominent in Western and Northern Europe - particularly in reference to the Nordic countries - during the latter half of the 20th century.

Modern social democracy is defined by its commitment to constitutional and representative democracy under the rule of law; support for a mixed economy that opposes the excesses of capitalism including inequality, poverty, and the oppression of underprivileged groups; and measures to extend democratic decision-making beyond politics into the economic sphere to grant employees and other economic stakeholders co-determination. Social democracy became associated with Keynesian economics.

Ron Paul
Libertarianism (Latin: liber, "free") is a political philosophy that upholds liberty as its principal objective. Libertarians seek to maximize autonomy and freedom of choice, emphasizing political freedom, voluntary association, and the primacy of individual judgment.

Libertarians generally share a skepticism of authority; however, they diverge on the scope of their opposition to existing political and economic systems. Various schools of libertarian thought offer a range of views regarding the legitimate functions of state and private power.

Some libertarians advocate laissez-faire capitalism and strong private property rights, such as in land, infrastructure, and natural resources. Others, notably libertarian socialists, seek to abolish capitalism and private ownership of the means of production in favor of their common or cooperative ownership and management.

Ahead of his first U.S. visit, Pope Francis celebrated mass in Cuba Sunday before hundreds of thousands of worshipers in Havana's Revolution Square. Born in Argentina, Francis is the first Latin American pope. He is widely praised in Cuba for helping to broker secret talks with Washington that resulted in the further normalization of U.S.-Cuban relations, and praised the detente between the two countries as "an example of reconciliation for the entire world." The pope's homily in Havana included no direct political message besides urging the successful conclusion of Colombia peace talks that have been taking place in Cuba for nearly three years. On Tuesday, Pope Francis arrives in Washington, where he will address Congress and meet with President Obama. We speak about Pope Francis' Cuba-U.S. trip with Carlos Alzugaray Treto, a former Cuban diplomat and former Havana University professor; and Andrea Bartoli, dean of the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and member of the Community of Sant'Egidio, a liberal Catholic group active in international affairs.

Crucial Marine Populations Cut In Half Since The 1970s

Some Important Issues Republicans Skipped During The GOP Debate
HP | Marina Fang | 09/17/15

Though Wednesday's Republican presidential debate on CNN covered a wide range of policy topics -- from immigration and foreign policy, to climate change and drugs -- it didn't address several issues of particular resonance, including many that have dominated headlines in recent weeks.

  1. Refugees: In neither the "kids table" nor the first-tier candidates' debate did CNN moderators ask any questions about the refugee crisis.
  2. Gun control: Just in the last few months, several high-profile incidents of gun violence, including the Charleston church shooting and the murders of two TV journalists in Virginia, have spurred renewed calls for more gun control legislation. Yet neither debate covered the topic of gun laws and access to guns.
  3. Racial justice: The moderators asked no questions about racial discrimination or police brutality against people of color. The Black Lives Matter movement has called on the presidential candidates to present platforms for combating racial injustice, but only a few candidates have heeded the call.
  4. Voting rights: None of the candidates were asked about voting rights and voter discrimination, even though GOP lawmakers across the country have tried to restrict the number of voters on the rolls, through various means.
  5. Workplace and family policies: The debate made no mention of workplace and family policies, such as universal pre-kindergarten and paid parental leave. 39 percent of U.S. private-sector workers do not have access to any paid sick days, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The problem is acute among lower-income workers, who often work in workplaces with less flexible policies.

The Second GOP Debate: It's Finally Time To Whack The Trump Piñata
HP | Igor Bobic | 09/16/15

Presidential hopefuls participating in the first Republican presidential debate last month in Cleveland approached the elephant in the room gingerly, giving businessman Donald Trump and his brawling persona a wide berth as they auditioned before a primetime audience for the first time in the campaign.

But the gloves are sure to come off Wednesday in the second GOP presidential debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, after weeks of polls showing Trump solidifying his lead over his rivals in nearly every early primary state. The surge is a remarkable turn of events given the real estate mogul's penchant for making controversial statements that would likely sink a more traditional candidate. ... Read more

More Than Half Of Jeb Bush's Proposed Tax Cuts Would Benefit The Top 1 Percent: Report.
HP | Ariel Edwards-Levy | 05/15/15

The poorest fifth of Americans would get just under 3 percent of the tax breaks.

While Americans at every income level would get a tax break under the presidential hopeful's plan, the report concludes, the size of that break would differ vastly. Those part of the poorest 20 percent of the country would receive, on average, a $227 cut, while those in the top 1 percent could expect about $82,392 -- a nearly 53 percent share of the individual income tax cuts. ... Will The Fed Pick A Winning Combination?
ZeroHedge | author | 09/16/15

The Fed may have noble mandates to help the real economy, but it will in the end always decide to do what’s best for Wall Street banks. And these banks could well make a huge killing off a rate hike. They can profit from trouble and volatility in emerging markets as well as domestic markets, provided they’re well-positioned. Given that they’ve had ample time, and it’s hard to answer the question who else is in a good position, we may have an idea which wind the wind will blow. Increasing credibility for the Fed and increasing profits for Wall Street banks. Might be a winning combination. And if Yellen is realistic about the potential for a recovery in the American economy, why would she not pick it? ... Read more

The Only Thing That Matters For The Rate-Hike Decision
ZeroHedge | author | 09/16/15

A week ago, we noted Goldman Sachs' 'strawman' that Janet should "think about easing," despite the world's misplaced confidence that rates will rise "inevitably" since the US economy is doing so well. Today, we get to hear what 'god' thinks as the only thing that matters for The Fed's decision is - keep Lloyd happy - and Goldman CEO Blankfein just said "U.S. economic data doesn’t support the case for higher interest rates." ... BofA (Bank of America) Warns: Market "Ominously Hints Recession Imminent", Unless "Unambiguous Pessimism" Leads To Stock Rally
ZeroHedge | author | 09/15/15

The tone from investors in the latest Bank of America survey is clear: as Michael Harnett summarizes it, the one prevailing theme is "unambiguous pessimism." Bottom line: either markets soar, or something bad is about to happen: to wit: "Unambiguous pessimism means risk assets riper for a rally (note investors don’t want a Fed hike this week). If no rally, then markets ominously hinting “recession” and/or “default” imminent." Good luck Janet. ... Read more

It's Agreed: Former CIA Chief Michael Hayden Didn't Kill Jesus
HP | Ali Watkins | 09/14/15

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden still isn't pumped about last year's Senate report on the agency's torture program. It's slanted, it's one-sided, and it cherry-picks information, Hayden wrote in a new attack last week. The way the staff of the Senate Intelligence Committee did their work, he said, they could've made it look like he helped put Jesus Christ on the cross.

... "There are no CIA documents to indicate that Hayden killed Jesus," reads a surgically precise rebuke from Feinstein, former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and her staff. She quietly posted a detailed rebuttal to Hayden's assertions last week. ... Read more

Bernie Sanders Is Surging. What Happens Next?
HP | Marina Fang | 09/13/15

When he entered the race in May, political observers largely wrote off Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as a “fringe candidate” for the Democratic presidential nomination. Few thought he would present a serious challenge to front-runner Hillary Clinton.

But Sanders has now surged ahead of Clinton in New Hampshire by an average of more than 10 points. In recent weeks, several polls in Iowa also show him leading Clinton in the Hawkeye State. ... Read more

  1. More than 2 million Syrians have poured into neighboring countries as refugees, the United Nations revealed on Tuesday.

The Big Bamboozle: 9/11 and the War on Terror

From the perspective of a Boeing 767 captain and former "special activities" contract pilot, Philip Marshall straps the reader into the cockpits of hijacked commercial airliners to tell the story of the most sophisticated terrorist attack in history. Based on a comprehensive ten-year study into the murders of his fellow pilots on 9/11, he explains how hijackers, novice pilots at the controls of massive guided missiles, were able to beat United States Air Force fighters to iconic targets with advanced maneuvering, daring speeds and a kamikaze finish. But, as Marshall explains, the tactical plan was so precise that it rules out car-bombers and shoe-bombers known as al Qaeda, KSM and Osama bin Laden. So then, who was it? That's what you are about learn. Backed by official NTSB, FAA and black box recordings, Marshall finds the most capable and most documented group of conspirators buried deep within a Congressional Inquiry's report and retraces their work in gripping detail. Fasten your seatbelt--- the sad truth is that all of the solid evidence points to a dark collaboration between members of the Bush Administration and a covert group of Saudi government officials. This is a game changer that will finally set the record straight on the most horrific crime in US history. ...
THE BIG BAMBOOZLE: 9/11 and the War on Terror by Philip Marshall (02/16/13) [1:00:14]
| More description
Philip Marshall's presentation has been edited down to 60 minutes from over 2 hours to remove all the non-essential information so that you get just the facts as Philip researched them. It also explains why President Bush did not immediately respond to being informed that the U.S. had just been attacked while he was reading "The Pet Goat" book at the elementary school in Florida because he was waiting for the REST of the "attack" to finish completing. Commercial pilots listening to this will appreciate the technical explanations regarding why ONLY professional pilots would be able to figure out the deception/bamboozlement. There is zero operational evidence on Bin Laden's participation in 911 but there are EIGHTY PAGES on the Saudi Intelligence involvement. Whomever takes over the United States Government automatically gets control of the U.S. Treasury System with unlimited funding of any activity that they choose.

California Becomes First State to Label Monsanto's Roundup as a Carcinogen
AlterNet & EcoWatch | Lorraine Chow | 09/10/15

In a first for the country, California's Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) has issued plans to list glyphosate -- the toxic active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup herbicide -- as known to cause cancer.

According to a "notice of intent" issued last week by the Cal/EPA's California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), the effort falls under California's Proposition 65, in which the state is required to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm.

The same law, otherwise known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, also requires that certain substances identified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) -- the World Health Organization's cancer arm -- be listed as known to cause cancer. ... Read more

LateShow | Vice President Joe Biden Interview, Part 1 (09/11/15) [10:35], Part 2 [9:44]
9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out, Vol. 1 by David Ray Griffin and Peter Dale Scott

Practically from the moment the dust settled in New York and Washington after the attacks of September 11, a movement has grown of survivors, witnesses, and skeptics who have never quite been able to accept the official story. When theologian David Ray Griffin turned his attention to this topic in his book The New Pearl Harbor (2003), he helped give voice to a disquieting rumble of critiques and questions from many Americans and people around the world about the events of that day. Were the military and the FAA really that incompetent? Were our intelligence-gathering agencies really in the dark about such a possibility? In short, how could so much go wrong at once, in the world's strongest and most technologically sophisticated country?

Both the government and the mainstream media have since tried to portray the 9/11 truth movement as led by people who can be dismissed as "conspiracy theorists" able to find an outlet for their ideas only on the internet. This volume, with essays by intellectuals from Europe and North America, shows this caricature to be untrue. Coming from different intellectual disciplines as well as from different parts of the world, these authors are united in the conviction that the official story about 9/11 is a huge deception manufactured to extend imperial control at home and abroad.

Remembering 9/11: The Wolf In 'Patriot Act' Sheep's Clothing

It is a moment that elicits strong emotions within me to this day and I know I'm not alone. In the days and weeks that followed, while the world came together to mourn those lost and to condemn those responsible, our policymakers in Washington were working feverishly to find opportunity in this tragedy. Forty-five days after 9/11, President Bush signed into law the U.S. Patriot Act. ... Read more

All the Presidents' Bankers: The Hidden Alliances that Drive American Power by Nomi Prins

All the Presidents' Bankers is a groundbreaking narrative of how an elite group of men transformed the American economy and government, dictated foreign and domestic policy, and shaped world history.

Culled from original presidential archival documents, All the Presidents' Bankers delivers an explosive account of the hundred-year interdependence between the White House and Wall Street that transcends a simple analysis of money driving politics -- or greed driving bankers.

Prins ushers us into the intimate world of exclusive clubs, vacation spots, and Ivy League universities that binds presidents and financiers. She unravels the multi-generational blood, intermarriage, and protégé relationships that have confined national influence to a privileged cluster of people. These families and individuals recycle their power through elected office and private channels in Washington, DC.

All the Presidents' Bankers sheds new light on pivotal historic events--such as why, after the Panic of 1907, America's dominant bankers convened to fashion the Federal Reserve System; how J. P. Morgan's ambitions motivated President Wilson during World War I; how Chase and National City Bank chairmen worked secretly with President Roosevelt to rescue capitalism during the Great Depression while J.P. Morgan Jr. invited Roosevelt's son yachting; and how American financiers collaborated with President Truman to construct the World Bank and IMF after World War II.

Prins divulges how, through the Cold War and Vietnam era, presidents and bankers pushed America's superpower status and expansion abroad, while promoting broadly democratic values and social welfare at home. But from the 1970s, Wall Street's rush to secure Middle East oil profits altered the nature of political-financial alliances. Bankers' profit motive trumped heritage and allegiance to public service, while presidents lost control over the economy--as was dramatically evident in the financial crisis of 2008.

This unprecedented history of American power illuminates how the same financiers retained their authoritative position through history, swaying presidents regardless of party affiliation. All the Presidents' Bankers explores the alarming global repercussions of a system lacking barriers between public office and private power. Prins leaves us with an ominous choice: either we break the alliances of the power elite, or they will break us.

170,000 flee homes after floods hit Japan, Fukushima nuclear plant safety at risk
RT | author | 09/10/15

Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to leave homes across Japan after Tropical Typhoon Etau ripped through the country. Military helicopters plucked residents from the roofs of their homes. Lashing rain pounded the country for a second day, and the Kinugawa River has burst through a flood barrier, sending a tsunami-like wall of water into Joso, about 50 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, AP reported. A bullet train service has reportedly been partially suspended.

The torrential downpour is also threatening safety at the Fukushima nuclear plant, closed since a 2011 disaster, as it has overwhelmed drainage pumps at the site's contaminated water treatment facility, a spokesman for operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said. ... Read more

Black Swan Event-Shift in Consciousness-Catherine Austin Fitts
usawatchdog.com | Greg Hunter | 05/06/15

Money manager and financial expert Catherine Austin Fitts is worried about exploding global debt. It has almost doubled since 2007, and Fitts says, "Yes, I am worried about it, and I still think the chance for collapse is relatively small, but I am very worried about the level of violence going up to deal with the tensions resulting from this. If you look at the debt, there are several things to point out. One, the debt is very high, but it is bifurcated between who is borrowing a currency they can print and people who are borrowing a currency they can't print. That's of great concern to us because with a global slowdown, a lot of people have borrowed in dollars, and now they got to pay it back at the same time they have to earn dollars, where it is tougher to do." ... GregHunter | Catherine Austin Fitts-Major Turning Point Comes This Fall (05/05/15) [27:18]
Even though financial expert Catherine Austin Fitts thinks the chance of total collapse is "relatively small" she's not discounting the chance of a major move this fall. Fitts contends, "I think this fall is going to be a major turning point. You see the SDR (Special Drawing Rights) system coming to a head. The U.S. budget is going to be a very difficult debate. You see the push to get the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the EU deal done. You have a lot of institutional relationships that needed to be restructured in the last couple of years. Those changes are all coming to a head, and so we are going to get a big shift. If you are managing a big bond fund, you got a big problem. . . . There is going to be a turn in the bond market or a plateau, and that's going to be uncomfortable for those guys, and we are going to see some messy times."

US Warns Of "Unprecedented" Russian Military Buildup In Syria: "It's Starting To Look Like Crimea"

With the war drums beating louder by the day, US officials are now warning that Russia's military buildup in Syria is "unprecedented" and is "beginning to look like Crimea." This Is Exactly What The Early Phases Of A Market Meltdown Look Like
ZeroHedge | author | 09/10/15

There is so much confusion out there. On the days when the Dow goes down by several hundred points, lots of people pat me on the back and tell me that I "nailed" my call for the second half of this year. But on the days when the Dow goes up by several hundred points, I get lots of people contacting me and telling me that they are confused because they thought the stock market was supposed to go down. Well, the truth is that if there is going to be a full-blown market meltdown, we would expect for there to be wildly dramatic swings in the market both up and down. ... Read more

A Crisis of Public Morality, Not Private Morality
HP | Robert Reich | 09/09/15

At a time many Republican presidential candidates and state legislators are furiously focusing on private morality -- what people do in their bedrooms, contraception, abortion, gay marriage -- America is experiencing a far more significant crisis in public morality. CEOs of large corporations now earn 300 times the wages of average workers. Insider trading is endemic on Wall Street, where hedge-fund and private-equity moguls are taking home hundreds of millions. A handful of extraordinarily wealthy people are investing unprecedented sums in the upcoming election, seeking to rig the economy for their benefit even more than it's already rigged. ... Read more

Global Equity Index Hanging On Lower Precipice
ZeroHEdge | author | 09/09/15

On June 17, our Chart Of The Day indicated that the Global Dow Index was "sitting on the precipice". The Global Dow is an equally-weighted index of the world's 150 largest stocks. Therefore, it is a pretty fair barometer of the state of the global equity market. The precipice at the time was the UP trendline connecting the 2012, 2014 and 2015 lows. In that post, we intimated that the trendline stood a good chance of being broken sooner than later. ... Read more

The WikiLeaks Files: The World According to US Empire

When WikiLeaks first came to prominence in 2010 by releasing 2,325,961 top-secret State Department cables, the world saw for the first time what the US really thought about national leaders, friendly dictators and supposed allies. It also discovered the dark truths of national policies, human rights violations, covert operations and cover-ups.

The WikiLeaks Files is the first volume that uses experts to collate the most important cables and shows their historic importance. The book explores in a series of chapters covering the major regions of the world how the US Empire has imposed its will. It reveals how the US imposes its agenda on the world: a new form of imperialism that uses a variety of tactics from torture and military action, to trade deals and "soft power," in order to expand its influence. It shows the details of the close relationship between government and big business in promoting US goods around the world.
Neoconservative Think Tank Influence on US Policies
Stalin's ethnonationionalism ran counter to the internationalist-revolutionary tendencies of Russia's Jews. Stalin, the Slav, wanted "socialism in one country," and he bested Trotsky the Jew, who held to communism's earlier goal-set of world domination. He won, expelled and assassinated his rival, and steered Russia back from a path that may well have led to a third world war. Jewish communists, however, were of course excluded from this vision, and Stalin was not a multiculturalist. He accused Jewish doctors of trying to kill him, and laid the groundwork for an ethnic purge of the party. He died before this could occur, but Jewish communists the world over for the hint: it was time to switch sides in the newly-named Cold War. From the ranks of Jewish (ex?)Trotskyist arose the neoconservative movement. American cold warriors were thrilled to have these new allies, and embraced them with open arms. First-generation neocons and their sons steered American opinion towards Israel, got the American right to internalize the mental furniture of Freud and Frankfurt, and all in all pulled off the greatest false-consciousness scam in history. The American right became Jewish, essentially a more jingoistic version of America's left.

Fed Hike Will Unleash "Panic And Turmoil" And A New Emerging Market Crisis, Warns World Bank Chief Economist
ZeroHedge | author | 09/08/15

Earlier today we got the most glaring confirmation there had been absolutely zero coordination at the highest levels of authority and "responsibility", when the World Bank's current chief economist, Kaushik Basu warned that the Fed risks, and we quote, triggering “panic and turmoil” in emerging markets if it opts to raise rates at its September meeting and should hold fire until the global economy is on a surer footing, the World Bank’s chief economist has warned. And just in case casually tossing the words "panic in turmoil" was not enough, Basu decided to add a few more choice nouns, adding a rate hike "could yield a “shock” and a new crisis in emerging markets" ... Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World (American Empire Project) by David Vine

From Italy to the Indian Ocean, from Japan to Honduras, a far-reaching examination of the perils of American military bases overseas.

American military bases encircle the globe. More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, the U.S. still stations its troops at nearly a thousand locations in foreign lands. These bases are usually taken for granted or overlooked entirely, a little-noticed part of the Pentagon's vast operations. But in an eye-opening account, Base Nation shows that the worldwide network of bases brings with it a panoply of ills--and actually makes the nation less safe in the long run.

As David Vine demonstrates, the overseas bases raise geopolitical tensions and provoke widespread antipathy towards the United States.

The Child-Rape Assembly Line
VICE.com | Christopher Ketcham | old, 11/12/13

Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg -- who is 63 with a long, graying beard—recently sat down with me to explain what he described as a “child-rape assembly line” among sects of fundamentalist Jews. He cleared his throat. “I’m going to be graphic,” he said.

A member of Brooklyn’s Satmar Hasidim fundamentalist branch of Orthodox Judaism, Nuchem designs and repairs mikvahs in compliance with Torah Law. The mikvah is a ritual Jewish bathhouse used for purification. Devout Jews are required to cleanse themselves in the mikvah on a variety of occasions: Women must visit following menstruation, and men have to make an appearance before the High Holidays, such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Many of the devout also purify themselves before and after the act of sex and before the Sabbath. ... Read more

*The Numbers Are In: China Dumps A Record $94 Billion In US Treasurys In One Month

The data point everyone has been waiting on is out and, just as we tipped weeks ago, China liquidated nearly $100 billion in USD assets during the month of August in support of the yuan.

In short, the pace at which Beijing is burning through its USD assets in defense of the yuan has serious implications not only for investors’ collective perception of market stability, but for yields on core paper, for global liquidity, and for US monetary policy. ... Read more

China's Central Bank Chief Admits "The Bubble Has Burst"

In a stunningly honest admission from a member of the elite, Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of China's central bank, exclaimed multiple times this week to his G-20 colleagues that a bubble in his country had "burst." While this will come as no surprise to any rational-minded onlooker, the fact that, as Bloomberg reports, Japanese officials also confirmed Zhou's admissions, noting that "many people [at the G-20] expressed concerns about the Chinese market," and added that "discussions [at the G-20 meeting] hadn't been constructive" suggests all is not well in the new normal uncooperative G-0 reality in which we live. ... The 10 Companies That Pay Americans The Least
24/7 Wall St. | Thomas C. Frohlich | 09/04/15

Amid soaring corporate profits and stagnating worker wages in the past decade, growing numbers of low-wage workers are demanding higher pay. In the wake of intensifying debates over income inequality, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved a rule in August that will require publicly traded companies to document the ratio of their highest-paid employee salary to that of their typical worker.

The nation's lowest paying companies frequently operate within one of three industries: restaurant chains, department stores, or hotels. These industries fall into two sectors, leisure and hospitality and retail trade, which, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), account for more than 70% of U.S. workers paid at or below the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Based on a 40-hour work week, Foss’s, of CEO of Aramark, per hour wage is about 1,700 times that of some of his employees. ... Read more

Perfect Storm Of Worldwide PMI Slippage
ZeroHedge | author | 09/02/15

Given "highly accommodative" policy almost everywhere, and so little gained; it isn't a good sign particularly after eight incessant years of it and the lagged effects from the renewed "dollar" wave still to be withstood. Every year was supposed to be "the year", but 2015 was a surefire lock according to orthodox versions. The real difference, unlike past years, is that everything is going wrong so far just as predicted by the "strong dollar." ... Read more

Saudi Arabia Just Cut Crude Selling Prices To The US, Europe And Asia
ZeroHedge | author | 09/02/15

WTI Crude oil prices are in total panic buying mode this morning as the algos are fully in charge once again. WTI is up 5% this morning in a straight line since US equity markets opened (and USO went vertical). Bob Shiller Fears "Substantial Decline" Sees Dow 'Fair Value' Around 11,000
ZeroHedge | author | 09/02/15

Rare Supermoon-Lunar Eclipse Combo Coming This Month
HP | Ed Mazza | 09/03/15

Keep your eyes on the skies during the full moon later this month -- because you could see something that hasn't happened for more than 30 years, and won't happen again for nearly 20 more. It's a supermoon and a lunar eclipse at the same time, and it'll be visible in much of the world on the night of Sept. 27 in North and South America and the morning of Sept. 28 in Europe, Africa and parts of Central Asia. ... California Is About to Do Something Great That No State Has Ever Done Before
MotherJones | Tim McDonnell | 09/03/15

Back in January, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) made a promise. His state, he said, would pursue a new package of climate goals that are the most ambitious in the nation (and among the most ambitious in the world). California was already a leader in efforts to slash greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy. Brown pledged to go further. By 2030, he declared, California would double the energy efficiency of state buildings; get half its electricity from renewables; and halve consumption of gasoline by cars and trucks.

... Before we get into the bills themselves, let's talk about California. Believe it or not, the state where America fell in love with cars and highways is now leading the nation, and the world, when it comes to climate action. And that matters, because California, the world's seventh-largest economy, is a world-class emitter of greenhouse gases. It ranks second for state emissions, behind Texas, and if it were its own nation, it would rank 20th globally, right between Italy and Spain. Still, it's remarkably clean for its size: On a per-capita basis, it ranks 45th among US states and 38th when compared with countries around the world. ... Read more

The Essential Guide To Growing Veggies Indoors. No Garden Needed.
HP | Julie R. Thomson | 09/03/15

Apartment dwellers know the challenges of growing a garden. Without a yard, it's hard to play in the dirt. But that doesn't mean that it's not possible. It just requires a little bit of determination and research -- lots of research. With those two things in hand, one can grow all sorts of things from the tiny nook of a windowsill. And we're not just talking herbs, either. Carrots and potatoes can be grown and harvested from the confines of your apartment, no outdoor space necessary. ... Read more

The poll finds that 54 percent of Republicans think Obama is a Muslim, 14 percent think he's a Christian and 32 percent say they are unsure. And Obama's country of birth also remains a question for Republicans. A plurality, 44 percent, say they don't think he was born in the U.S. Only a third believe that he is American-born, and slightly less than another third are unsure where he was born.

"The Biggest Problems We Face Is That We're All Flying Blind To A Large Degree" Warns Deutsche Bank

"One of the biggest problems we face is that there is no historical template for current global market conditions so we're all flying blind to a large degree. World's Biggest Economies Devise Plan That Spells Doom for Planet Earth
AlterNet | Reynard Loki | 09/02/15

More than 80 of the world's leading scientists, environmentalists, indigenous leaders, farmers, philanthropists and authors have signed a letter to Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, current president of the G20 group of the world's major economies, saying that they are "deeply concerned" about the G20's focus on mobilizing as much as $60-$70 trillion of investments in large infrastructure projects over the next 15 years.

The plan to overhaul global infrastructure was devised at the last G20 meeting, held in Brisbane in November. While it may have good intentions -- more roads, bridges, dams, power plants, airports, seaports, pipelines, sewers and telecommunications systems to support a rapidly growing human population -- large infrastructure projects can be damaging to the environment, animal habitat and the communities they are meant to serve. From roads slicing up pristine wilderness and highways disrupting critical wildlife corridors to dams flooding rain forests, ruining freshwater biodiversity and forcing people to relocate, many mega-infrastructure projects have ultimately caused more harm than good. ... Two-Thirds Of Global PMIs Deteriorate In August
ZeroHedge | author | 09/01/15

World: On the first workday of a new month, global PMI manufacturing surveys are released around the world. That gives us an early read on the state of manufacturing.

First the good news: of the 28 global regions that have reported PMIs so far (the US Markit PMI is due later today), 18 posted a print of over 50, or indicating manufacturing expansion.

Now the bad news: comparing August to July PMI data saw a deterioration in 19 of the 28 countries, or more than two thirds, suggesting that while the global economy is not in a recession yet, absent some dramatic improvement, which in this day and age would mean another dramatic bout of monetary easing since fiscal stimulus stopped doing anything ever since central bankers took over in 2009, a global economic contraction is just around the corner. ... AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
